Iâve had an Alko 2.2kW shredder for 15 years. It works well, with a bit of care and practice, but it is noisy, and getting old. New blades each year cost ~£20, but for that it provides many barrowloads of composting material which make a good complement to grass cuttings. I was thinking about getting a new shredder, perhaps one of the quieter ones.

This time last year there was some discussion here by people who were about to buy shredders. Did they buy them, and how did they get on with them? Do they run without choking up, and if they do choke are they easy to clear?

I bought a Mountfield quiet shredder last year, to replace my Alko (over worked) works well but don't chop up the pieces as small. So will take longer to compost down. Works on wood up to 40mm dia crushes it rather than chops it.

Many thanks for the link Palustris - a brilliant and very useful site. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop. Only problem was the kid had no cash! :D

Thanks everyone for the information. I'll feel a bit happier now about getting a new shredder
