Shrubs

I have been trying to grow a hedge from different shrubs at the front of my house for 3 years everything is coming along well and i am pleased with the results, except for one place at the bottom nearer to the road that always dies suddenly after about six months. It is becoming a nightmare and costing a lot as i have planted quite expensive evergreen shrubs. You are always hearing extremely hardy evergreen shrubs being mentioned on tv so i have tried some of them but they still didn't survive even top quality hardy plants. Can anyone suggest an evergreen that will survive anything more or less it is very windy and exposed where we live in the West Country. Advice please i would be grateful.

 

Sounds like you need to investigate why that particular part is having a problem, and see if it's something you can fix, imo. Maybe it's a weather issue - if it's an the exposed corner, for instance, there may not be much you can do, and might have to find some other solution, like part fence, or wall, even. But if it's just that it's where all the local dogs are doing what comes naturally, or some other less environmental factor, like the soil there being no good, if it's been filled in with builders sand, or sonething like that - you could fix it, then plant whatever you like and it would be ok. Have you thought along those lines?? If not, it might be worth it. How about a photo? We like that!!

this seems to tolerate most positions,evergreen, variegated, small highly scented flowers for a short time.
If a major problem where planting, then dig a LARGE hole, sink a LARGE pot into the hole, plant your chosen shrub into the pot in good compost, water well, should be fine.
as Dendrobium says there may be an underlying problem. cats can be a mennace, put some fleece round the shrub as a barracade until it gets established

 

homely hi, what have you tried thats failed to date?
Could it be that the rest of the hedge is established now and anything new has trouble competing with the others. :confused:
