"People living in period properties are being told they can dramatically reduce their energy bills, simply by closing their curtains or shutters at dusk.
    ....
The project is funded by the Climate Challenge Fund"

Talk about stating the bleeding obvious! You and me are paying for this 'research' through our taxes, cmon Cameron stop throwing money down the drain on this load of rubbish.

It's in Scotland though...don't they pay for that sort of thing themselves now?

You are right Aaron, just googled "Climate Challenge Fund", looks like it is a Scottish Quango, no excuse though. They have been given £27.4 million, surely they can spend it a bit more wisely.

And some writers in the press were moaning about the cost the forthcoming Royal Wedding would cost. At least that would give people a bit of a lift and positive vibes. Whereas this is just annoying - especially when they state the very obvious.

From my experience of living in Edinburgh, a lot of apartments didn't have proper heating anyway and those old windows in the New Town houses were old and very drafty!

I'm surprised by that Aaron, I've only spent a weekend there and all I noticed living in the centre were Students, maybe they are too poor to afford proper heating.

Beggars belief don't it. Shut your curtains & you'll stay a bit warmer, that'll be £27 million thank you madame.

    I'm not pricing jobs right.

The real problem with Victorian houses and heat is the very high ceilings. Much of the warm air will rise to the the top of the room beyond the level of people's heads.

Ways to keep warm from Claralou Expert Consultants Ltd:-

    1) Remember to shut the front door after you.

    2) Wear clothes.

    3) Move to the Canary Islands.

That'll be ten million quid please. Plus expenses.

    1. Building an exterior wall cladding system (Exterior Insulation and Finishing System - EIFS) in order to provide exterior walls with an insulated finished surface.
My house has recently been equipped with this "equipment" and I must say that IT WORKS ! I mean: the interior temperature keeps steady for many hours without the heaters being working.

    2. Double glazing windows.

    3. I would say: using all those materials that are not thermal conductors, such as carpets, wood etc.
But unfortunately, many of these materials are INFLAMMABLE (!!!!!!!)
I know that in Britain they make a wide use of carpets/moquette and wooden floor.
In Russia they go even further: they put carpets on the walls !
I saw that with my own eyes when I was in Moscow.
They "clothe" the walls with carpets...
Otherwise, the russian use FLOWERS wallpapers... :hehe:
Even in the airplanes' cabins (I saw that in the Aeroflot Tupolev 154 :hehe:).

    4. Short Ceilings. As they use in Sweeden.
Unfortunaly, in sweeden they are 2 yards tall and when they stand up they hit their head...

    5. Dress Wollen underpants (even though they are scratchy. Even though they feel like sandpaper).

    6. Follow my neighbour's advise.
When he was asked how does he manage to spend so little money for heating-costs, he replies: me and my wife, in the night, warm each other up in a "different way"...

"I said to the Mrs, put your coat on.

She said oh, are you taking me out ?

I said no, i'm turning the heating off."

    Think that was Lez Dawson.

Last fall I had my home remodeled for thermal reasons – it was just too hot on summer and freezing cold during winter. We had the entire house thermo isolated, changed the frames on all windows and replaced the old venetian blinds with some heavy curtains – so we successfully eliminated all draughts on windows and doors – now there is no heat loss and with the summer on the way I know the heavy curtains will prevent unwanted heat from entering the rooms.
