Three weeks ago I bought a stauntona hexaphylla and kept it indoors because it had just come out of a polytunnel and I wanted it to get a bit stronger before planting it out. However, it hasn't put on any growth and some of the leaves have gone brown at the edges. I keep it slightly moist and it's in a south-facing porch. Am I being over-protective? Should I let it take its chances in the ground? Any help gratefully received.
    Thanks, Lindy.

    Lindy - I don't know Stauntonia.

You have probably done right to protect a plant that had just come out of a polytunnel. Now I would be tempted to harden it off by putting it outside during the day, and just bringing it in at night. Don't worry about it not appearing to grow. Plants often lurk for a while, then put on a sudden spurt of growth.
