I have two staghorn sumachs growing just fine in my borders. But just toward the end of summer the leaves on both of them start drying up and browning. It starts w leaves drying then stems and works its way down the plant from the top.
It happens just before the glorious colours come out.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is? I understand it's drought-tolerant so it can't be lack of water. Besides, we've had such a wet summer. Also, I have no suckering problems w them. I have photos but it says I 'may not' post attachments.

Without seeing pics, it might be due to the amount of rainfall we have. Sumachs prefer dry soils.

Thanks. Super Moderator. Do you possibly know why I am not allowed to post attachments. And is there a way to change that so I can post photos? I have pictures of the sick sumach. thank you.

It's possibly caused by too much rain. But it happened last autumn too. Was it a wet summer in 2007?

:) Hi Mrs Flowers, unfortunately the attachments button is not active at the moment, but you can post the photos up using a free photo host like photo bucket, which is the one most of us use... HERE is a link to how to do that.. It is very easy & takes minutes..!:)

    Hi Marley
I have posted my question in the tree section and have had a response. More importantly, I have posted three pictures. The link is:
