Hi everyone it seems like most people are Nikon, but I'm canon i have a 70d, I've been looking with interest on your discussion on the sigma 150-600, as much as i love photography the amount of time I actually spend taking photographs I couldn't justify the outlay, there is a 150-500 going on my local gumtree for £300 would you think that this is worth it?

Good morning @mazambo I think that you have already answered your own question my friend,I have a Canon 77D and a Panasonic FZ1000,the Sigma 150 x 500 is quite heavy but is a great lens with fantastic optics, but please be very wary of all used cameras and lenses,if you have to justify your purchase then all I would say is don't purchase it,photography is all about what you want your camera and lens to be able to achieve,I just love wildlife mainly birds in flight, and the panasonic gives me F2.8 right through its range, which in this country throughout the winter months as you know the light is very bad is very handy.

Here is a link to one for sale at Wessex Cameras it gives you more INFO.

It depends on the condition and age of the lens and how many times it has been used of course ,but purchasing used photography gear is always a gamble:smile:

I would go to your local camera shop and have a look at one get the feel of it and see what you think my friend;)

I have looked at the lens and IMHO it doesn't look in the pristine condition as the seller states.Hope this helps:smile:

@wiseowl much appreciated info, it's birds and landscapes for me, in no rush to buy so I'll probably leave it a bit longer and see what comes along.

Ffordes are worth checking out for used camera equipment @mazambo. Years ago they were in the Southend, Essex area where I was reared, but now reside just two miles from where I currently live, here in Inverness-shire. They have a good reputation and if you keep an eye on their site and see something you like I'm willing to go down and check it out for you. :)

If you want something for distance shots then another option is a 200mm lens with a 2x adaptor on it (making it 400mm lens). Probably get sharper images than a telephoto at the same setting

Good morning @mazambo my friend just something to be aware of,converters are alright but please remember with a 2x teleconverter you will lose 2 stops.

2.Using teleconverters means less light gets in which means your maximum aperture will be decreased. When using a 1.4x converter this means you’ll lose one stop and when using a 2x converter you’ll lose two stops.

3.However if you’re shooting in low light or indoors you’ll notice the impact of this more.

                4. Camera Shake – As you extend the focal length of a lens – any movement of your camera will become more noticeable.

5.Focusing Speed – Another consideration with tele-converters is that they slow down the speed at which your camera will focus. This will vary from lens to lens but is particularly an issue in lower light. Some lower end DSLRs will not be able to use Auto focusing at all with some teleconverters at certain aperture settings (or at all) – so do check your camera’s compatibility before buying.

6.Image Degradation – Extenders multiply not only the focal length but also any aberrations of the lens you pair it with. As a result you’ll notice on many lenses that image quality suffers – I’m told this is particularly the case with longer extenders (x2) where sharpness and contrast suffer – particularly when shooting into light (where flare and ghosting can be a problem).

@wiseowl ,wow a lot if info there, thanks once again, @Loofah I like that idea, I may have a 300mm lens, not sure, just having tea and crumpets in the greenhouse at the minute, I'll take a look when I'm done, thanks.

£300 for an old, well worn, discontinued lens doesn't sound like good value to me (probably not much less than the vendor paid for it years ago, especially if it was a grey import), when you can purchase a better copy with a 12 month guarantee from a reputable dealer for about £50 more, or the latest version for just over double that, but better off overall taking account of it's resale price.

Some vendors reduce their price of secondhand stuff by 10% or more around Black Friday. But that's a long time to wait on the offchance of a reduction in 8 months time, when you could be getting out and using something in the meantime.

Small birds are constantly moving around and losing 2 settings of shutter speed can result in a whole series of (partially) blurred images. I've just got around to looking at some burst mode shots of birds on the ground under feeders at a local reserve and in almost every one of them, every at least one part of them was constantly moving.

I have a Nikon D5300 DSLR with a 70/300mm lens but only find it of any use with subjects fairly close or birds in flight. I use my Canon sx60 far more due to the range.
