I don't go a bundle on thistles generally, but the 'milk thistle' is a nice thing to have popping up in odd spots. There's a dryish, sandy bank fairly near here where it has naturalised and usually looks a treat in winter and early spring. As the flowers open it starts to look a mess, but you can't have everything.

Apparently the oils extracted from the seeds are an excellent tonic for the liver and the roots of 1st year plants can be dug in winter, and cooked in the same way as skirret, schorzonera, salsify etc. The plants can also be forced and blanched with the resulting leaves (minus the spines) providing a less bitter alternative to endive. Quite a useful little plant really.

Kandy, the leaves are attractive but are very spiny and our plants have got up to 5ft in diameter  . The flowering stalks are a bit gangly with smallish flowers compared to the size of the plant. Any one who wants to grow it must remember that it seeds very easily so it is best to cut off the flowers before they seed otherwise they will be all over the garden.
