    Afternoon all,
I'm new at gardening and could really use help.
I've planted silver ivy as I think it blends well with my ilex Holly.
Once the ivy is established will it cover and hide this metal railed fence.

    Thanks

Well it might do but it will take a few years.
Really ivy is better when it has something solid to climb up as it sticks with aerial roots.
Really whatever you use on a fence like that is going to need a lot of tying in and training.
A twining plant would be more suitable but go with what you have got .

      Hi Pete,
      Thanks for messaging
So would you say it's better to grow the ivy along the rails instead of straight up

Thinking about it you could be right , on the other hand if it gets to the top it will hang down.
But ivy does spread sideways usually without too much encouragement.
Something I've never tried, but it does smother most things quite well if not rapidly to start with.
