For some reason my pc is suddenly taking a lot longer to start up.
Its always been reasonably fast, perhaps a minute and a half or so.
Now that time has increased to about four minutes before the icons appear on the screen.

What actually affects the start up time, and why in this day and age do we have to wait anyway.
Do the valves need to warm up? :D

I'm not even going to try to respond to this Pete. You are way to intelligent for me.

Well i will tell you the only thing i've heard of which is something like:

It depends on how many 'programmes' or whatever start up when you start - sorry that sounds silly, but i'm sure you know what i mean. I think of it like a car or something. If you switch on & it has to load up loads of things before it 'comes on' then it takes longer. I don't know exactly what the pc gets what it does to start, but i understand it can be something you don't even know about.

How to fix it - pass. I cannot understand things half as much as you but you can find out on the 'help' on pc.

Sorry if you're now shaking your head & going 'for goodness sake' Pete. Trying to help.

    Hope you get it sorted.

    Cheers

Cookies loading can slow down web access but not start up times jjordie. Doubt if its that.

I don't know about slow but everything keeps locking up on me and I have to shut down ... and the storms have passed now for the time being.

I was just here in GC reading a post, not touching the keyboard or mouse, and everything went blank and my Yahoo front page came up?

Such are the mysteries of computers ...

Right thanks for all, and I mean ALL your replys.

John I recently downloaded the BBC I Player.
Do you think it could be that?

I guess the only way to find out would be to uninstall.

I'm always weary of those downloads for sorting out the registry etc. especially if free.
Surely windows has its own built-in defrag, which I use occasionally, but usually it dont need doing.

Not for this Pete. This is excellent, written by an expert and used by professionals (including my eldest). He tells me there is no paid for program that does this job. I've got it on my pooter and have set it to auto-run whenever I boot. It doesn't clean the registry apparently. Just defrags it.

My son is here and suggests you try uninstalling the BBC prog.

    Bit more normal, anyway. [IMG]

Surely there must be someway I can have it installed but not working on start up.

Pete, I've not tried BBC I Player. I was tempted, but the site didn't really provide enough info about what it did and how it worked.

The BitDefender anti-virus software I run usually provides me with an option to decline launch at start-up when I install new software that wants to configure my PC to launch at start-up.

One way you might be able to delete programs from activating on startup is to >
    Click the Start button.
    Point to All Programs.
    Right-click Startup.
Choose Open from the shortcut menu.
Then just right-click and choose Delete for what you don't want.

    Thanks Dave,
I've reinstalled BBC I Player now.

As usual I missed something first time round.
Under "settings" on I Player there is a box that comes already checked, it says "Launch I Player on start up".
    I've now unchecked it.
