Now I know it should be obvious but to me its not!!!Last night i was searching about to see if there were any slugs around my nice new plants. Right where i planted one there was some of that slow release fertilzer in the soil -little yellowish balls about 2-3 mm round. Also there were some other little balls about the same size but a different colour. when i squished some of these a fluid came out. Is it possible that they were some kind of moisture retentive stuff put in by the garde centre or could it have been slugs eggs? I must dmit that when i thought it was slug eggs i ran back in and washed my hands about 5 times!!

Slow release fertiliser is normally evenly distributed thoroughout the compost (or certainly should be) and opaque, a yellowish brown or off white colour. Slug eggs are white, somewhat smaller, semi-tansluscent and normally laid in clusters although they are easily disturbed.

Old, slow release pellets sometimes have fluid just before they completely break down. Slug eggs would have a bit of give in them before they squish whereas the fertiliser pellets would be fragile in a crispy sort of way. [IMG]
