This may well be an old idea, but I hope it helps less experienced gardeners.

I'm plagued by slugs. However they don't get to my lettuce. I've taken an old kettle barbecue, removed the lid, and drilled holes in the containing area. The legs have a low layer of vaseline, higher up a strip of copper, and finally a band of salt/vaseline. I'm on my second lettuce crop this year, beautiful results, and completely undisturbed by slugs.

    See picture!

Ah, but you have not accounted for the slugs and snails who abseil down the wall and then swing across !

Gave up on lettuce long ago , if the S&S don't get them the birds and aphids will ! :mute:

That's great! I love the idea of using the old BBQ as a container, I would imagine any remnants of charcoal would enrich any compost you put in there somewhat too.

I'm quite surprised to see that the lettuce grows in such a shallow container.

Brilliant idea but keep on guard as those pesky critters will be working a way to get to the food:)

My veg beds seem pretty much slug free. This morning when doing a bit of weeding I found a big fat toad living in there. Reckon he/she is eating all the slugs. I'm going to make several little wood piles around the veg beds to encourage more toads.
