I have quite a few snails and slugs that I am trying to curb (don't we all) but I am a little worried about using slug pellets. Even though they are safe for pets, how safe are they really?

A few years ago in my old place, I put some pellets in a tub and the next minute my cat was eating the pellets... I called the vets and they told me to bring him in. Luckily, he was okay after a course of charchol tablets. The vets said, even if it says they are safe for pets if eaten in large quantities they can be fatal.

So what do you all think?

    Thanks,

    GP :D

Hi GP..I had the problem of our cat digging holes around plants to mess in,as they do!,and I discovered she hated oranges I put down to catch slugs /snails with. So if I have young tender juicy plants to protect using pellets,I only use them under hollowed out half oranges. I must add that pellets are a last resort on my patch...around now when it's damp and the garden is scrumptious [IMG]

    Hi there,

Thanks. Actually, someone did mention using lemons or oranges to deter cats... So I could just use them in the beds with the pellets underneath and then he will go and poop in someone elses garden :D and hopefully not eat the pellets!

    Hi Gilly,
I can't rid your garden of slugs and snails, but here's a method that works very well:

Lay an old plank of wood on the ground overnight, and in the morning turn it over. There's normally about a dozen slugs etc hiding there which can then be left to the birds, or removed and disposed of.

The only other method that works well is a beer trap, I use an old jam jar on its side with a drop of beer in - Slugs cant resist the smell and climb in for a drink - only to drown in the liquid !

    Good luck.

That sounds excellent! I must have a look in Wilko's when I next go. I did buy some stuff from Sainsburys the other day - it's called Slug Blocker and it's a liquid / gel that you put around the plants. It is clear too so you can't see it. I used it around the Dahlia's cos they are really bushy and in pots so hopefully the cat can't get to it if he is attracted to it in anyway *fingers crossed* [IMG]

Hi there. I like the wood idea... then I can just kill them all in one go by accidently dropping the wood back on top of them [IMG]

I have a jam jar at the ready (been meaning to try it for a while) just got to get the beer. I read somewhere that you can put bran flakes down too? Apparently they eat and eat until they explode. Not sure if this is a proven method but it's worth a try!

Well, I wouldn't go for the last method GP - or do you fancy clearing exploded slugs off your plants, etc? Gad, it sounds ghastly!

Also a little sprinkle with table salt works a treat and quite rapid too.
