I was transplanting into a bigger tub. When I lifted the plant out, there were several slugs in the compost round the root ball.
This has happened several times the last couple of years.
A few months ago, a tub plant died. When I tipped it out, there were a lot of slugs. I think they must have killed it.
Would the remedies for leaf eating slugs work on the ones which burrow, or not?

    Thank you.

      Hi,

What type of plants have you got in the tubs?

Sound like you need the Slug Nematodes what you water into the soil of the tubs.

Not heard of slugs killing established plants by the roots, but Vine Weevil grubs will and like certain plants particularly when in tubs so you might need a Nematode for them as well.

Whippet, I regularly check under pots for slugs; when repotting I do the same.

Nematodes would work in pots for slugs.

I would apply copper tape around the rim of your pot.....kept clean it is very effective.

Was the compost very wet Whippet? I think your plant may have suffered this way making a suitable environment for slugs :)

Have you added any stones or broken pottery into the bottom of these pots? Slugs love it.

This last one had a perennial lobelia in it. I can't remember what the one was that died off.
Do vine weevil grubs look like tiny yellowish pellets? If so, then I have had them, too.
I always thought that crock had to be put into the bottom of pots to help drainage. And, yes, the compost in the pots is wet.
@ ricky101. I will take a look at those links. As I have dogs, I have to make sure things are safe.

By the way . . . you wouldn't think I come from a line of Market Gardeners/ Nurserymen all the way back to 1600, would you. :gardening:

                Hi,

If you have seen the vine weevil grubs in spring then they will have likely killed the plant and the slugs will just be eating up the rotting remains etc.

Any pots of compost /soil that have got them wants bagging and removing otherwise they hatch into the adult beetle which which go around laying eggs for for the next lot of grubs, though probably too late this year.

If you see the nematode suppliers pages seem they are all total safe to other life.

                  Tetters. Thanks for the picture.
I haven't seen anything which looks like that.
The things I had look like eggs. But I have not spotted any beetles around at all.

The little yellow pellets could be fertiliser

Hi Mike...I've potted plants in the past and recent early this year for my pampas grasses to kick off and I always add gravel at the bottom and the top and never had any slugs

I use chicken pellets as fertilizer. But what I saw, were like your pic. but singles.

I love cockles and winkles - but never fancied slugs. :thud:
