Morning all. Quick question - got a 100cm x 70cm shady area against a wall I'd like to put something - preferably with a potential for a bit of height (maybe up to 2 - 3 m). It's bounded by pathway.

Would a fatsia japonica be suitable (or indeed the spiders' web variant which I think is smaller in spread)- height is perfect - but I realise the spread on these can be much bigger - but with sensible pruning would this work as I am lead to believe these can be pruned to fit smaller spaces quite well? Alternatively if not, any suggestions? Evergreen preferably as I don't want to be staring at blockwork for half the year!

    Cheers

Perhaps Spider's Web or Fatsia japonica variegata if you can find it. That's definitely less vigorous. Or Hedera trained on an obelisk? Sulphur Heart and Gloire de Marengo are striking varieties. Or, if the soil's suitable, what about a Camellia?

The fatsia would work well, with pruning. I have one in a similar area. It always helps to have a shoe horn on hand, you know, just so it's snug!

My Fatsia j. got to 4m x 3m in the UK. It broke my heart to have to prune it!

Thanks everyone. I think I'll give spider's web a go, once the weather is more appropriate!
