No - as I recall they are a different species, and don't taste very nice. Never having tasted either - I can not confirm.

The French eat a number of different species, including the one most commonly found in the UK - the Garden Snail (Helix aspersa, I think is its scientific name). I was served some small ones recently called "petit gris" - 'little greys' - in a cream and garlic sauce. With crusty bread, of course! Surprisingly nice, actually! Must admit I don't like the big ones!!!

And since we Brits eat winkle and whelks....!

Well, it's one way of making sure they don't come back into your garden :D

No way would I eat them, turns my stomach over at the mere thought! Forget about the winkles and whelks too. I guess it's partially what you are brought up eating and also how adventurous and brave you are. I'm chicken in this respect!

When I was a child being dragged up in the east end of London it was obligatory to share a pint of winkles for tea on Sunday night - from Tubby Isaac's stall of course!!
Sitting there with a pin to pick off the black top and then diving into the shell with the pin to "winkle out" the winkle was normal.
So being here and eating snails served up on a posh plate with lots of lovely garlic sauce is easy peasy. [IMG]
Frog's legs taste nice but there's not a lot of meat on them................... sorry [IMG]

However, I draw the line at horse meat which is sold here in the supermarkets. I'm not into My Little Pony a la creme.

    I can relate to that!
Wouldn't eat frogs' legs on principle, though - the animals aren't humanely killed, and there have been pest problems in areas that have exported frogs because the natural predators have been removed...

Wonder if anyone's thought of eating cane toads, though...?!!!!

    Hyla,

Spot on about the frog's legs.

You don't have cane toads there do you? The Aussie ones kill the native wildlife when they come in contact.
