    Hello all,

First post! Newbie gardener, keen as mustard and novice. Just moved into my first house with my first garden in Bristol (yay!).

I dig through my two borders, one for veggies and one for decoration. Dug through some muck, compost and gypsum, added some extra top soil etc and it was looking and feeling pretty good. Planted in a few new shrubs and perennials I had been collecting along the way, and then... beast from the east and storm Emma. No!

All covered in snow now. I’m
Worried I’ve lost all my new plants! Probably naive to put them in a bit early, but I wanted to get them out of pots and into the ground before spring. The ground wasn’t frozen when I planted them.

    Any help please?

      Welcome to Gardeners Corner :sign0016:

They might be ok, at least the snow will insulate them from the wind chill :fingers crossed:

Hopefully so! I mulched them with bark afterwards as well, so hopefully that helped too.

Allium shoots were sprouting through, will those tender shoots have been damaged? Not grown them before.

Morning @Tom Fisher and a warm welcome to Gardeners Corner my friend as our good friend @Zigs has said the snow will act as insulation hopefully:smile:

Thanks @wiseowl! Hopefully not too much damage done. Kept some 9cm potted perennials in the shed, soil frozen but sheltered anyway from the elements. Hopefully they’re ok too!

                Warm welcome Tom :)
Yes, I agree with what has been said
A lot depends on what size plants you put out, the varieties and if they were "hardened" off.
Fingers crossed they will be ok

All were good sized and were all hardened off, so fingers crossed.

Thanks everyone for the tips! And hopefully my antifreeze blooded aliums will be great too!

Supposed to be 11c here next week, madness!

Welcome @Tom Fisher ! I've got a fair few seedlings/young perennials tucked up in my coldframe at the moment. Hopefully as the others say yours will be ok, but let me know if you suffer heavy losses; I'm not far from you (BS6) and always plant far more than I have room for.

Hello! And thank you so much for the offer! I’ll let you know...

Do we have a DM function on this site so we can discuss? Could be useful for plant swapping etc?

It does very much depend on what you've planted, whether they were dormant and how hard you compacted the soil back down.

A couple of freeshias, an eryngium (which was sprouting), couple of small clematis and jasmine, bare root agapanthus (just started to sprout), and a few established but small (10-12") shrubs inc a rose, choisya, cornus, couple of smaller blueberries. We shall see, the soil was recently dug over and mulched so fingers crossed there won't be too much damage...

Tom, the agapanthus and eryngium are most susceptible there I think. Eryngiums are tough but dont like cold wet conditions esp when newly planted.
Possibly shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted but I would put a cloche or fleece over the agapanthus for now. :)
