Help! I sowed some French beans about ten days ago. Out of the dozen, only one has come up. I checked the other pots and the beans had turned into a soggy white mush. Have I over-watered them or are they not viable? (The packet is dated December 2011).

Overwatering ! The seeds have rotted. More plants are lost through overwatering, than underwatering. Time enough to re-plant and keep away from the watering can this time. Cheers, Tony.

Thanks Tony. I guess the weather has been so dull that the greenhouse hasn't warmed up enough to dry the compost out. Do you think the same applies to other things like peppers, aubergines and squash? Or is that down to the lack of heat?

Seeds need a damp rather than wet environment Chris. As Kleftiwallah says go easy with the watering can.

You'll find a good guide to germination temperatures here >

Now that's what I call comprehensive Dave! Thanks. I'll be more frugal with water from now on.
