hi everyone this is my first post hopefully i will get some help

i moved in to a new house a few months ago on the front there is a very large ornamental conifer (i think) with a large soil bed around it i have cut all the low branches from the tree to let sun light to the ground but the soil is very fine (almost like dust)are there any plants that will grow in fine soil or can anyone advise how i can recondition the soil with out taking the tree out

(p.s) when is the best time to plant winter/spring flowring bulbs and a good place to buy them

Not much grows well under a conifer, as they take up so much moisture and nutrients from the soil (that's why it's so dry and dusty).

It might be possible to dig in some sompost to improve things, but it's likely there will be too much root from the conifer to let you do this. If so, maybe you could put some containers round the base, since you've taken some of the lower branches out. How about a photo so we can see what you've got to play with? ;)

re bulbs - the best time is when they're all over the place in B+Q, Woolworths, all cheap shops and garden centres!!! So, keep your eyes peeled! Really, though, later on, late summer, autumn you'll see them. Have a look at the internet places, like J Parker http://www.jparkers.co.uk/,and some others which you'll find if you put bulbs in and google! Have fun!
