Until recently I bought compost bags. Now Ive started buying topsoil. I utterly love my garden and I am sure some of these questions may seem basic but I just don't know and want to make it nice so heres what I do, if I'm doing it wrong let me know.

I use compost for potting seeds.

For plant potting something I've dug up I use a 50/50 mix of compost and topsoil.

On my flower beds each year I add a layer of compost and then a layer of topsoil, about 2" of each, then I mix it up with what was underneath. (I seem to lose soil each year as it "goes down").

I don't flick every stone out or riddle the soil, I only throw out the big stones. (I use them as crocks).

If I dig something in deep into the clay level which is sandy and hard I dig right into the clay, I seperate the clay, let it dry and crumble it around into the topsoiled areas, it goes like biscuit crumbs with no effort.

I have a couple of "hollows" in my lawn I am thinking I might just put some topsoil down and pat it flat with the back of the shovel, will that work or will it wash away? (hollows 1" deep from being walked on).

I've been reccomended to use pelleted chicken pooh and mix it in.

Well thats about it, A little chat about soils would be most helpfull.

    Thanks in advance.
