I have had 3 wheelbarrows, 2 builders' type with pneumatic tyres plus an old (approx. 45 years) lightweight barrow with a solid rubber tyre that's easier to put in the back of a car and is really useful to use after the farmer has cut the hedges and the footpath is covered with thorns.

Unfortunately, one of the handles on my lightweight barrow has snapped and I think I know the reason why:

    pumpkin barrow.jpg

I've checked the likes of Homebase/B&Q and modern solid tyre wheelbarrows have plastic wheels with a plastic tyre that looks as if it will last no time at all Link. I saw one like mine at a car boot sale that had been 'renovated', which looked liked defects in the frame had been filled then painted over. On ebay people want stupid prices for old knackered barrows, for example £35 incl delivery or £18 - collect from Cheshire

Anybody know where I can get a proper small barrow with a decent solid rubber tyred wheel like my old one? I'm even considering buying a new one and swopping the wheel over if it will fit, or heating up and bending a piece of metal rod to fix the broken handle back to my old barrow as I suspect it would last longer than a cheap and nasty new one.

You can obtain 'solid wheelbarrow tyres from here

    http://www.greentyre.co.uk/ They're in Middlesbourough.

I've two on my water bodger in tasteful green!

How about sliding a good length of steel tubing inside the two broken halves of the barrow handle? Cheers, Tony

It's not a wheel I need - it's my barrow that is broken.

    l've already worked that one out as a last resort. It's broken on the bend so solid rod will be much easier to bend to fit inside the frame tube;

Was Kleftiwallah meaning to fit a solid tyre in place of the pneumatic one on one of your "servicable" barrows?

It's another small, lightweight barrow I'm after, like the one in the pics.

That's identical to the one from Homebase in my link above that I dismissed because it has a thin plastic tyre.

I found a few places that used to sell those (sometimes resorting to googles's cached copies) and assumed they were no longer available but will try checking by phone/email The tyre looks much more substantial than the one on those sold by Homebase & Argos:

P.S. I will also check the overall wheel dia, as it would be an advantage if my existing rubber tyred wheel would fit and be kept as a spare.

Here's one that appears to be available, a Parasene Britannia, but I'm not sure about the high (sit up and beg style?) handles design, both for comfort whilst using and increase in overall dimensions when transporting in back of car, defeating the object of a compact barrow. Anybody got one of them?

With you on that. I have replaced my oddments collection with high quality builder's barrows, and the balance is so much better than I can shift bigger loads confortably and stably - which saves me time.

My Mother used to have a Ball-Barrow (if that's the correct name). Googling it I see that Dyson has one ... I have no idea whether the balance is any good, but it might tick the "fits in the car" box, and the ball-wheel is supposed to make a difference - at least it won't puncture!

The one I seemed to remember my mother having was chunky plastic, probably something like this:

The Dyson one looks like it might be balanced (although it looks as thought more material / weight could be at the back, rather than over-the-wheel) :

          Google found this one too:

This presumably flat-packs for the car, no idea if it will take a load of anything other than dry leaves!!:

and this might be an option for rough terrain (might be pneumatic though):

Kristen, I haven't looked on the internet recently but the Dyson BallBarrow was discontinued many years ago. Dyson sold the company (it was sold out from under him!) about 30 years ago.

I still have one (bought it early to mid seventies) but I don't think there are any out there for sale except very secondhand ones. They were made out of polyethylene and made to last :blue thumb:. Probably why they went out of production.

Just in case anyone thinks it too much of a coincidence that I have all three of the barrows mentioned :) Here's a photo :blue thumb:

          P1160338.JPG

The builder's barrow has my own home-made extension that is about 20 years old. It's made of plywood and just slots over the barrow.

          I even have a spare ball :hate-shocked:
