Anybody got a Solitary Bee Box in their garden and do they really attract the bees?

In view of the fact we are told that all bees are in decline thought I might hang one,
or maybe two, in the garden.

I've thought about building one or two, jjordie, but wasn't so sure whether or not they'd be effective. I thought it was just a resting place for solitary Bees when they lost energy. So I'm not sure whether it's just a fashion fad or idealistic theory. Any one any ideas???:D

We have a lovely bee box. It has a hole at the bottom for them to get into, some cotton wool inside and a nice liftable roof with a sheet of perspex inside so you can lift the lid and see the bees.

We've had it two years (and tried putting it in three different places near blue flowers, and have only ever seen a large spider in there, and a couple of earwigs.

I put up one of those, hanging from an apple tree, about 18 months ago but not seen any bees in it. They may be hiding from me. :heehee:

I just found a thick branch from a tree and drilled loads of different sized holes in it, then screwed it to a fence post in a relatively undisturbed bit of garden. Gets used all the time and by a wide variety of creatures not just bees.

Good to hear that Loofah - perhaps I will try one - or maybe, like you, will drill several holes in a bit of branch. This year we had several solitary bees make nests/holes along the side of our gravel path so I know they are in our area.

I am going to tie some bundles of hollow stem prunings up in a couple of places around the garden and see what happens.

This year we had no great tits in the nest box - it was taken over by a colony of white-tail bees. - (Happy to report however that the great tits nested in the box I had put up for my neighbour.)

Hmmmm, well, as the "nothing happened with the boxes" outnumbered "dids" I don't think I bother building any!!:D

I had one in the last garden, spiders just used it as a good place for an ambush.

Bees did not return to nest behind the shower this year, guess the harsh winter did for them:(

My Bees have left the compost heap after using it for 3 years, so now I can start using the black stuff at the bottom:D:yess:

Love the Bee houses they look the safest place for any Bee
Having the Bee Houses stops Bees nesting where we do not want them

one of the chaps on my forum built one see his blog here:
Mishaps In The Making: My bees are hatching!

I think there are some pics earlier on - he seemed to get a housefull!

We had them living in the bird house one year after the blue tits left.
