My solomon's seals are in full bloom at the moment, but shortly lots of pale green caterpillers will cover them and reduce the leaves to skeletons. This happens every year.
There is no evidence of eggs, (I have just looked) and I never see anything flying around the plants. Has anyone
    any experience of this problem?

It is a very common problem with these plants. All you can do is spray as soon as you see the first signs of damage with a suitable insecticide. Otherwise let them get on with it. the plants seem to survive the attacks, fortunately.

They are Soloman's Sawfly larve, and they appear late May /early June . Eggs laid by small black fly .. Easily killed by a spray of Provado whilst still small
