Thanks mowgley, I'm trying it on full manual, it's hard to get the settings right for every condition. I'm sure ill get there tho. I don't want to use green box mode as the other 2 cameras are fine for that.

I'm very happy with my Panasonic tz1 and my Fuji fine pix for everything. Macro on the fine pix is excellent and is a good camera full stop for a bridge camera. The tz1 again is a cracker. I just fancied a dslr for a change for versatility. I don't know much about cameras at all sal, so it's all pretty new to me.

The point is when you go to a superstore will only find bad advice , if you go to a specialist shop they will treat you like an idiot , Panasonic tz1 , look at reasonable price and really handy size as well . I`ll may treat myself with a similar :blue thumb: ,

The tz1 is a cracking camera. It's not a current model now as I think there has been a few models since, but I can recommend the tz series sal. Mrs al carries it around in her bag to capture shots of the boys.

There's quite a few of us buying new cameras at the moment!!! The 550d is a really good camera and has some brilliant write up, al, you've made a good choice there. All you need to do is find your way around it....just like I'm having to!:heehee:

im no photographer, and im more than very happy with the pana and fuji, but wanted more of a challenge with a dslr. also, when the boys are old enough for the school sports day, i want to capture a good motion picture in a still, and i think dslr's are where its at for the more detailed stuff.

i took a pic of our eldest when we went on our first family hol with the pana tz1 and its a belter, the quality and detail is superb. so much so, i got it blown up on a 4ft x 3ft box canvas in black and white for mrs al's xmas prezzie 2 years back and is now pride of place on the stairwell wall.
its not lost any quality being blown up either, and that was with the tz1 on the auto easy setting. best pic we have of henry when he was 1.

Some great feeling captured in the first three shots al, Moody, Mad and Happy..:) I like the background in 1 where it's just starting to blur out, it focus's the eye onto your lad.

Try a little more zoom so the subject fills the frame more and is not lost in the middle of a canvas, also worth trying for portraits is turning your camera on it's side and shooting in portrait style.

Like this shot I took of Kyle a few years ago.

thanks steve. i need to definately practice, practice and practice. fully manual with the iso, shutter speeds, etc, etc, etc.... is alien to me, but i'll get there with time i'm sure.

                  crackin pic of your lad!!
