I was looking at my Hydrangeas the other day and I noticed that they are covered in some kind of white "goo" . It's as if someone gone around and put blobs of toothpaste along the stems at intervals.

Can somebody tell me what it is and what to do about it?

Thank you very much

Is it really goo, or is it actually composed of small fluffy white creature that go red if you crush them? Check again.
If that is the case its ... mmm, no idea of the english word, google suggests "cochineal", not sure.
There are specific spays and products for this stuff. Better get to it as soon as possible because they can suck an Hydrangea to misery.

;):D Just been thinking, they do sometimes get attacked by powdery mildew. It could be that.. It is usually caused by damp, cool conditions. If it is. Your garden centre should have fungicide spray for it. You would need to remove all the infected leaves as well & DON'T compost them.. Also so don't feed it for a while... Hope that is of some help.:)

Delboy, it sounds to me as if your Hydrangea has wooly aphid. Spray with Provado.

Thank you all for your help.

I was going to upload a photo but I'm not sure how to do it. (If I'm allowed too!)

Can't help with hydrangea problem, Delboy, but who do you have to get permission from to upload a photo? Not us, in fact photo's are a big help if there's a problem. Have a look around this site, you'll find loads of them:)

cheers
