I know I'm full of questions... but,

My dad gave me some chrysanths that he grew from seed which I planted out, and the ones which have escaped the slugs are now about 5 inches tall. I should I be nipping out the middle? (The bit with the flower bud on?) I read somewhere you should, but I don't know if it applies to the size plants I have. They are a single shoot growing upward with the usual feathery, whispy leaves growing out from the single stem.

Hi. To encourage side shoots it's normal practice to pinch out the 'leader'. This can be done more than once, ie you can also pinch out the resulting side shoots. It just depends what kind of result you're after. For bigger flowers, then you would probably only pinch out the once, for more (but smaller flowers) you'd pinch out again. The only thing is though, every time you pinch out, flower production is delayed. This is fine if you're ahead of the game, so to speak, but it sounds to me like you'll be pushing it to pinch out twice and STILL get flowers before the first frost. My advice ( for what it's worth) is to pinch out now, then just let them do their thing. Can anyone else add anything ? Hope this helps.
    Cheers...freddy.

I don't know!! My dad grew them from seed, said they'd be about a 2' tall.
