I've been with Southern Electric a couple of years now.

I seem to remember some bloke coming round telling me how much cheaper they were than British Gas.

    Switched over, no real problems.

Electric meter packed up, total confusion for six months.

Ended up with six months free electric.:hehe:

    Hi robert,

Having dealt with consumer problems for many years I would suggest that you do not agree to anything when cold callers come round. Even then it doesn't solve the problem if they are going to break the rules.

    Basic precautions:-

If you want to hear what they say (not usually recommended) ask them for their name.
Don't give them any information at all.
Ask them to explain why they think they will be cheaper.
Ask them for some paperwork you can study when you have time - then say you have to get off to a meeting, party, pick up the wife (or any woman :hehe:) etc

All the energy suppliers have had numerous complaints about their cold calling tactics. Their callers sometimes switch you over even if you have said that you don't want them to. The energy suppliers deny any complicity in this but I am dubious about it :skp:

All suppliers have customers that are happy with them and ones that are unhappy with them. I suggest that if you are interested in shopping around for energy suppliers then you should look at some of the 'switching' websites. The only one that I know and would recommend is the consumer association one (Which?)

    http://www.switchwithwhich.co.uk/home.php?m=home&

All the info that you will need in order to checl it out is how much energy you consumed in the last year. If you get an annual statement from your supplier it should be on that. Otherwise, look up your bills for the last four quarters or you can ask your supplier for the total amount you have cunsumed in the last year.

Sometimes you will get a cheaper quote on a switching site if you check for a price that combines electricty and gas.

    Good luck :gnthb:

    Great reply thanks
I ask because they blitzed our little cul-de-sac the other day.
I myself closed the door in his face.
Unfortunatly my 101 year old next signed up and I know of two others amonst our little band have signed up to.
I have managed to cancel my 101 year old agreement but as yet still have to suggest to the other two that this may not be the way to go.
I totally think that cold calling on a 101 year old is not on and I recon they must be breaching a code of conduct and I let southern Electric know this during the cancellation conversation.
I have now taken it apon myself to check around and see if I can get a better deal for her.
I have already managed to get her gas payments down from £100 to £77 a month which is a good start.
The building has also been cavity insulated and loft insulation topped up just a few days ago, so theres some savings there for her in the future.
Going to start a www search and investigate options.

    Oh yes;
Another thing this cold caller did.
Ask to read the gas and electric meters. (ok with that )
But then asked to see a recent bank statement !
That I do not agree with. but our 101 year old did as asked.
As he was leaving she asked. "Am I signed with you now"
"Yes" was the reply. Fact is she did not know what was what until it was all over.

I HATE door to door salespeople that do this, especially hassling the vulnerable (regardless of age). Good on you for helping out your neighbour. I can't believe they asked to see a bank statement either! Personally, I never open the door to strange callers, as I just get angry with them for interrupting me (usually out in the garden!)

Can you hang on for a while??
I have Jack across the road with a rare motonuroun (spelling)
He cant swallow and has to have all his food liquidized and his wife in here late 70s has to do "everything" for him and I mean everthing!
Theres Rose across there as well with azlhemers (spelling)
She usually does not know what day of the week it is.
So you see, I,m a bit busy right now to take on anymore.:flag:
And then theres the triple by pass, and crumbling backs and a host of other nasties down our street..
And, do you know what the good thing is?? we all talk about it, which is really great and really helpfull.
