Sow sunflowers now?

    Greetings from Shoreham-by-Sea.

A silly question, I know, but is there the slightest chance that sunflowers sown now would reach maturity and flower?

    Thank you

It's too late for this year Neil, it takes 3 months to my knowledge.

In which case, you would be looking at October  If we continue to have mild weather (and you water them very well and regularly) you may still have a small chance of success.

You could experiment and plant some of your seeds now. Then, keep them well watered and pay homage to Mother Nature in return for mild weather - if that fails: plant the remaining seed next Spring :)

Last year I planted Cosmos seed well over due ... and I was very fortunate to be rewarded with some gorgeous blooms. That's what I love about gardening in the UK: sometimes we can push the boundaries and still get results. Other times, we learn from our experiments. Overall though, it's about "trying" and see what works for you, in your soil, in your location and under your care ;)

Well, I had a go and the sunflowers (in pots) have done well so far. I presume they're not frost hardy and would have to be brought indoors overnight when frost is forecast?

Would assume so, mine haven't flowered yet on account of every sowing getting eaten by slugs until I planted the whole pot out. Safety in numbers, they just had the ones around the edge.

        Have they flowered then?

If they are small enough, what size have they got to?

Oh, no, they're only two to three feet high at the moment.

Mine are too, but they're "M"s Welsh Dwarf ones :)
