When is the best time to be planting herbs. I am doing a stack of tyres (like Bob Flowerdew) and I am making a large herb garden with them. When is the best time to be planting the seeds. I will be planting direct into soil outside.

    Many thanks.

What sort of herbs ? as some wont take from just being sown into the ground..and definately not in the cold months..If you havnt got a greenhouse you could start herbs off next feb/march on a windowledge then plant out..I saw bob flowerdews stack of tyres and thought it was really good especially his potatoe stack..

I will be planting basil, parsley, chives, thyme, rosemary and may try root ginger.

I can start them off in the greenhouse, but wanted them out really by february, would that be too early?

I don't know ginger comes. Is it a seed or a bulb?

My local herb grower told me that it is best to plant out herbs now while the soil is warm. Then they can get established and put out new roots [IMG]

If you wait till the spring, they just sit in the cold ground and before they can put out new roots, they rot :(

However, any herbs like sage, which are only just hardy, may well suffer from frost over the winter. So perhaps they would be best over wintered in a greenhouse

One of the great things about gardening is that for every two gardeners there are three opinions.

hi badsal, you can buy root ginger and plant it. Look out for bits that have growth nodules, or even with luck a green shoot starting. Plant so that the nodules are only just covered. They aren't hardy so need to be indoors or in a greenhouse over winter.

The basil and rosemary will have to be started in your greenhouse and they wont be able to go out till the frost has gone..The parsley .chives and thyme. you could do now..thyme is really slow to grow so you may want to do that indoors also..I will have to have a go at growing some ginger i have never tried but will get some and see what i can grow..I dont know if you have access to anyones rosemary bush but if you do than it would be easier and quicker to take some cuttings now...that would be a lot quicker than seed..

Many thanks for all that. I am going to start now in the greenhouse and see what happens. I will get some ginger from grocers tomorrow and try that too.
