Has anyone sown any veg. directly into open soil yet. I was thinking of sowing some peas outdoors this weekend. The variety is twinkle. Is it still too early?

    Hi
I have sown a few things but under cover. If you wanted you could sow them under cover, but i would wait till the end of march and still put them under cover.

    Kind regards boygardener

We seem to suffer greatly from mice and its not unusual to lose the majority of the seed if planted directly into the ground.

My allotment neighbour in on her third sowing already this year...in a leanto greenhouse!

I haven't even started to warm up a planting strip yet - the ground is so wet, I'd rather it had a chance to dry off a bit first. We're a bit later up here anyway....

So far--- Pea 2" high under closh Raise in guttering in greenhouse and transfered two weeks ago.
Sugar snap set in ground under closh but not yet showing.
Broad beans Jan sowing 2" high.
Spinich First broad leaves are showing although Perpetual Spinich is not yet showing.
Ground set carrots are just showing.
Early leeks are in holes, greenhouse raised.
Onion greenhouse raised in moduals planted out last week.
    Shallots and onion sets showing,
Winter set garlic 6" high although early tips have gone brown but not the later leaves.
Lettice in modules planted out under mini closhes (2 ltr water bottles split down there length and pinned into the ground.
Today as an experiment sowed ten French Beans for greenhouse raising.
Just hope the rumors about global warming is correct as I do belive I might have pushed my luck although much of it is under closh or fleece.
The jury is out as to weither I have been a clever b***er, Lucky or will have to start again but that is part of the fun.
Ment to add all in raised beds which has been a good wind break and good anchorage for fleece and poly closhes.

Just to ask when will be the best time for me to start planting my seeds in to my veg plot.
I have Beetroot ââ?¬â?? Savoy Cabbage ââ?¬â?? Carrots ââ?¬â?? Cauliflowers ââ?¬â?? Swede ââ?¬â?? Leeks ââ?¬â?? Peas ââ?¬â?? and onion sets.
All say to plant from March to April
Will this mean I can plant them out now or do I need to start them off in the greenhouse?
I have got Poly tunnels; Fleece cover and Net Tunnels to protect my veg plot from frost, insects, birds, and other pests.
Look forward to your help and advise.

    Hi Roxy

It sounds like you have all options covered! I've started planting things outside (onions & garlic) and other things in the greenhouse (peas, peppers). Most of my roots won't be planted for another week or two. I think it's best to be governed by the weather and state of the ground.

Help, I am running out of space for my veg/salad which are all in containers, will probably have to put the milk canisters on the fence! I have a swing which has a trellis either side, and at each side sits a pot of clemis which is trailing upwards, would it be alright to put a grow bag there as well as i want to grow kidney beans up the trellis too, and can the beans be sown indoors now? I have some parsnip seeds and beetroot can they be sown indoors too now?

Sorry have a lot of questions being it's my first time growing veg etc big time. I haven't room for a cold frame so when the time comes can i put them in my porch which has a door on. Or would it be best to put them in my cold plastic greenhouse, that's if i can get them all in as it's only a small 4 shelve one.

I think i will have a go at sowing peas as well now since you lot gave me the idea.

Weekend gardener you could sow your parsnips indoors.I tried sowing them in toilet roll tubes last year and they did really well. The toilet roll tube will rot in the soil. I will be starting my beetroot off in the greenhouse soon for planting out at the end of april.
