Spam pests.

Hi,

I'm with Virgin Media but generally use OE Classic for email.

How can I please exterminate this pest once and for all from my emails;



I've blocked her on Virgin Media and on OE Classic added sender to blocked Sender list.

I haven't a clue who she is I want rid of her but she's persistent and annoying.

Any ideas please?

Sorry, I can't help you with that Colin. I can honestly say I have never received any spam mail....and I don't know why?

Thanks Sheal. I receive some spam but usually can clear it without problems but just a couple are persistent and defy being blocked. Over the years I've been a member of lots of forums and also have to give my email to companies in order to open trading accounts so spam could come from virtually anywhere; whatever I do if I don't recognize the sender the email doesn't get opened other than to block it; any attachments are definitely left well alone without exception.

Whatever we do in life there's always someone willing to spoil it; I was brought up when trust meant something.

One guy I trust sent me a link to bitcoin and this proved a nuisance until I finally succeeded in getting rid of it; I don't trust any get rich schemes or ideas.

Quite right, there's no respect for anyone or anything anymore. The same with mobile phones. I rarely use mine and a receptionist at the local hospital got quite haughty when I refused to give her my number. I have a landline, what's wrong with them using that?

 

If you have blocked Them from Virgin Media , it should not get through to your email client, so worth double checking you have set it up right.

Or do you mean , it is beging blocked but you can still see it in the Spam folder/s ?

Do not think there is much you can do other than program the spam folder to empty automatically more frequently ?

As we are sure you know, never open it, then they know you are there !

You might find its not someone mailing you direct, some bots can pick up other folks email contacts list and use those addresses, that contains yours, to send out their messages.

Always worth opening new email accounts with the likes of Gmail and Outlook so if your VM accounts become too bothersome you can easily move away.
Also allows you to easily leave VM as a provider as you cannot keep your VM addresses if you leave.

 

I agree about these being a pest. Some messages could easily cause the recpient shock/heart problems. Despite unsubscribing from the senders distribution list, I still get loads.

 

Sadly, in some cases, hitting the Unsubscribe button just lets the senders know you have opened it, so they continue to send you more or pass on your address to other associate companies who send you more !

Last year found that Thompson& Morgan and Van Muewen ( under both now under new owners BVG ) sent us daily spam and Unsubscribing and even emailing them would not stop them.

Thankfully Gmails spam filters worked ok, but we still found it sickening that such "reputable" companies are doing such things, of course its only real effect is that both have lost our custom, we will never order from either again.

When ordering online always look out for the little boxes that need ticking or clearing to say you agree, or not, to being mailed about future offers etc. - easily missed !

Thanks Sheal and well said; Bron and I don't have a mobile phone welded to our ear and our landline mostly gathers dust; I prefer email because then I can read at my leisure and reply unlike a phone making us its slave. I had five phones at work plus a pager so I detest the lot of them. We do have a pay as you go phone each just in case of emergency.

Thanks also for the VM link but I've already used this in order to find out how to block messages; there are only two senders who get through and they are always arrested in my spam; my spam settings are on medium and if I set them higher then genuine messages are occasionally marked as spam.

VM I can click once to block a sender but on OE Classic I click on "Add sender to blocked sender list" and also click on "Add senders domain to blocked senders list" I always click on both but still these two pests get through. It's not a major problem but it just annoys and if they can bypass being blocked what else is attacking my computer?

Out of interest I know personally one of the senders from my vintage radio restoring days; I thought he was a decent guy and tried to help him; I have many hobbies and this guy was looking for large diameter reamer and knowing I attend Rufforth Auto Jumble asked me to pick one up for him; unfortunately the weather prevented me attending the Rufforth event but as far as I was concerned the search was still on and I kept checking eBay etc; a few weeks later a friend informed me the guy had bought a reamer whilst visiting Australia and this guy didn't have the decency to let me know. Later the guy emailed asking if I would oblige by collecting two big boxes of vintage valves (tubes) to which I agreed; he would let the seller have my details then we could arrange a mutual time and date; I was horrified when I received an 11pm phone call from Huddersfield's notorious red light district; I immediately emailed the guy saying sorry I don't want to be picked up by police for kerb crawling. He's a selfish pest and I don't wish to have any contact with him whatsoever. The "Amanda" spam I haven't a clue who she is and the message always includes a web link but that's all; I'm sure clicking on the link would be trouble.

Thanks also for the Thompson & Morgan information; I've just received their latest booklet and they do have my email address as do other suppliers; I'm aware email addresses get sold on and I'm extremely careful to tick boxes to exclude other contact than just my order.

I've had a Gmail account but don't like the format; for many years I much preferred Outlook which was from my Office Pro 2003 but the emails started to go missing when sent or not arriving; I cleared the lot and started afresh but the problem persisted then a trusted friend kindly suggested I try OE Classic which I've successfully used for quite a while; I paid a one off £25 and now receive updates; OE Classic is similar to Outlook and I'm happy with OE Classic.

My VM email is active although my OE Classic pulls my messages through; if I have problems VM is there as my back up. I send lots of images via email and sending these was always easy with Outlook until the problems started but now they are OK with OE Classic. Perhaps using my 2003 Outlook it is now obsolete and no longer supported?

Thanks Mike, I don't get loads of spam and as I say most are easily blocked by me; I'd contact VM but it's not worth the hassle.

I spend a lot of time on my computer for emails and for the Internet in fact I spend too much time on it but it is a valuable tool for learning and keeping in contact with friends around the world.

I've just knocked off for a mug of tea but time now to head back into the real world; my workshop and get my hands dirty.

1. Just let them go to Spam and forget about them, otherwise they have achieved what they set out to do, annoy you, don't let them win.

2. Think OE Classic, Free version, has a 2 account limit, so somewhat restricting for our use.

We used to use the original Outlook Express but now find Thunderbird work well and allows many users and accounts, all for free, eg you can have your own accounts/profile and you wife can log on in her own accounts/profile

Many thanks JWK for your welcome suggestion; I'll have a look next time the messages appear; they already come through as spam so are diverted from my normal mail.

Many thanks once again ricky101; I'm sure you're right in that messing around with spam annoys me more than the sender; I was hoping there was an easy way of completely blocking such senders; it must register with them when I block them so they keep sending them?

I used OE Classic free version first then as I liked it I didn't mind paying the one off £25 to upgrade; OE Classic isn't bullet proof; I have friends in Thailand and two emails were sent to me; the first pictures of new house site which came through OK into both VM and OE Classic but the second with the message only arrived in the VM but at least it did arrive. I'm the only one living here who uses a computer; Bron won't touch it at all. Thanks for the Thunderbird link which is worth looking at. When you mentioned Thunderbird it reminded me of;

Ah yes, beautiful machines but in those days way too expensive new , had to settle for the little Tiger Cub.

Thanks for adding the picture ricky101; I well remember these Tiger Cub 200cc; nice bike but with problems; if they were run for a while at around 50mph they used to suddenly cut out?

My cousins husband had the Thunderbird in 1971; I bought a year old BMW R75/5 750cc and a year later traded it in for another same model but brand new BMW. I was so proud of these BMW's and at that time for what they cost I could have bought a terrace house; happy memories.

Hmm... no such problem with mine, we often went on long runs down the A1 etc.

The dealer I bought the Cub from, in the mid 60s, also had BMWs in for repair, and heard one running which I thought sounded ok, the mechanic said if you can 'hear' a BMW then somethings wrong with it.

Seems the reverse is true these days with the straight through exhuasts screaming up the local roads, though the Hogs can be equally deafening with their low frequencies.... must be getting too old
