I really could cry, I purchased a winter flower clematis positioned it so it would grow on a metal framework. I've put copper tape everywhere done a garlic wash and tried the wd 40 on the lower part of the pot and the slugs have still stripped it bare. I really don't know what else to do. Also I placed salt on the wall were the pot sits.

Pesky things. They've sampled just about everything here too. It's heartbreaking.

          You could try slug pellets?
I mean they do work, and are more effective that all that fancy copper tape, and how garlic would work is a mystery to me, they actually eat garlic, given the chance.;)

Not sure about WD40, sounds a bit toxic to me.

Just scatter the pellets very thinly, and dispose of the dead slugs/snails in the mornings.

It's not at ground level they have eaten clematis its potioned on a wall climbing up a very pretty metal framework which now has got little tabs of copper tape wrapped here there and everywhere, but I think i'm left with two tiny leaves on the plant.

Yep, but slugs in general have to go back to soil level in the daytime, under anything but the wettest conditions it's too dry for them up off the ground during the day.

Snails however can remain up in branches during the daytime.

Must admit to never trying copper tape, but personally I think it a myth.

What's more, it's possible to buy slug pellets based on something other than metaldehyde which does have adverse effects on wildlife and pets. A roundabout way of saying that if 'Ferramol' is available in the UK, it's a relatively harmless but effective way of controlling slugs and snails!
That's because I've had an apero or two and can't remember the active ingredient in Ferramol:redface::biggrin:

Yes you can buy pellets based on ferric phosphate and metaldehyde, I keep both types handy.
