Well the article refers to a piece of software called turboyourpc and associates it with Microsoft. Searching Microsoft's site for it yields a top result of a forum discussion started by someone asking how to remove it. General search results seem to mention viruses a lot.

Microsoft themselves put a lot of work into making their Windows operating system pretty much maintain itself. If there was a magic solution to eliminating bloat, I'm pretty sure Microsoft would have integrated into their flagship product by now. After all, their business depends on them staying ahead of the now very credible Linux based alternatives.

The main reason computers slow down as they age is simply that software gets more resource heavy as it matures. Every new feature takes more cpu time and memory, and every file added has to be indexed. Software developers write code for whatever hardware is considered to be the baseline at the time of release.

A secondary problem is neglected hardware maintenance. Computers are the perfect environment for dust. They suck air in for cooling, and electricity attracts dust (all about static charge polarity). Such dust accumulation affects cooling, and as modern cpus and gpus and dma controllers etc approach their nominal max operating temperature, the circuitry automatically throttles itself to reduce power consumption and to prevent overheating. There is no software that can do anything about any of this.

The best way I've found to speed up your PC if it's slowing down is to uninstall unwanted software from your PC as that will free up space and make it faster. It's amazing how many programmes we install and how many we actually use. You can also defragment your PC on Windows, this will help free up more space.

I've been seeing ads for a piece of software called Scanguard that is supposed to not only protect you from nasties but speed your computer up a lot. It's advertised on the BT website. Supposed to be a freebie.

I don't intend to download it as I'm happy with what I've got but I'm curious about. Any of you techy savvy people know anything about it?

I'm a BT customer and can't find it  I'm guessing it might be in the "adverts"?

If your a BT customer @shiney , we have BT internet protect free from them. I'd also download something like Avast or Mcafee.. if you haven't already got an antivirus software program on your PC.

I downloaded something the other day, I ended up with Winzip updater, Advanced PC care, Chromium and another undesirable on my pc.. I've had many messages telling me I need to update so and so and I have 57 viruses when infact I have none they just want you to spend money on their program and b*gger up your pc even more .. I've now deleted them and no more messages!

Hi @Linz thanks for your reply.

I already have Avast and some other protection software as well as the BT protection. So I don't need anything else but was just curious about Scanguard.

The advertisement was on the BT homepage when I logged in. Although I use Outlook to download emails (we receive about 100 good emails per day) I log on to my BT mail account each day to check the Spam folder there. We have three BT email accounts and, over the years, their filters have become exceptionally good. The only problem is that they sometimes filter out emails that we should receive - about three a week.

Well it's good to get these things out into the open. Thanks @HarryS

I had no intention of downloading it but it's good to warn others. I actually had a bit of trouble with your link as, after a few seconds, it became overlaid with a pop up ad. There was no way to get of the ad apart from closing the tab. I then clicked on your link again and it came up with no problem.

I never put any security software, or any other sort, on my computer but I know a man who does. :heehee:
