Spelling

    Checking a gardening book this morning I realised I was spelling not only Ceanothus wrong but Spiraea aswell. I've also just written Philippines on another thread, that was wrong too, it's a double p not double l. Another one some of us have problems with is Paeony.....having said that my gardening book also has it as Paeonia and Peony.

    Why do these plant names have to make life so difficult! :scratch::)

    I hate to say it Sheal, but you are also spelling. as well. wrong as well.:loll::loll::loll::dbgrtmb:

    I triple checked that post Dai, because I knew someone would pick up on something. Now, I can give you all sorts of excuses for that mistake, where do you want me to start. :heehee:

    Point taken, I'll just blame it on a senior moment.......and two sets of glasses with three sorts of lenses.......and trying to look at two books whilst changing said glasses to write on the computer with the second pair. Does that make sense! :loll:

    Think I've totally lost it now! :DOH:

    NO. I prefer the excuse of 2 sets of glasses and 3 choices of Scotch - much more believable - from 1 mis-spelling pensioner to another!

      Sheal you do know that when you press "submit reply" to a post, the GC software automatically inserts at least one spelling misstake :D
      Plant names are often difficult to spell they have lots of double vowels to get the wrong way round. Although one that I have trouble with is Chili ,Chilli ,Chile , Chilis Chilies , Chillis , Chillies :scratch: Which is the correct singular and plural of it :wallbang:

        You could always use your Spell Checker. :dbgrtmb:

          Tis easy - if you have one plant, it's a chilli but if you've more than one, then you grow chilli plants each of which have several fruits on them :heehee:

          Rather like the Mongoose debate ... 'please send me two ...' - mongoose? mongooses? mongeese? - 'Please send me a mongoose. PS - make it two'!

              We've had this kind of thread before and I quoted Geoff Hamilton who said "that it doesn't matter how you spell plant names or pronounce them. if you're talking to other gardeners they'll know what you mean.":heehee::heehee:

              I have Dai, but can't see what you're getting at.

              It was gcc3663 who mentioned pensioners. I'm not far off anyway. :)
