But they are our friends, they eat flys!

I don't mind spiders although I don't like touching them for some reason, but I was just thinking this morning in the garden that I would like a couple of arches over the path and remember from my childhood how they always seem to be bridged by spiders webs.

There is a spider who lives in my potting shed and every day I have to knock him off to get past but after months of doing this he still insists that he has the right to be there!

So no amount of knocking them off the arch is going to deterr them and I hate to do that to them?

Anybody got any thoughts on this? ;)

yes i turned the hosepipe on the nasty in my photo yesterday and today the crafty begger has spun a web at the rear of the greenhouse ..i thought i had washed him away..he is determined to stay..well i dont mind him so much at the rear as long as my hair isnt getting caught in his web i dont mind so much..I wouldnt touch them either dag..and i used to be terrified of daddy long legs but have got over that a bit now..as long as they are outside... I have come to the conclusion i only like things with fur and feathers..I am over run with mice outside and cant get a photo of them as they soon run off..i dont mind them at all..or the occasional rat that passes through..my friend is over run with badgers and i think they are sweet he doesnt as they have dug his lawn up and the council said they are protected by the law so they cant poison them..he is really angry..They have been putting all sorts up the fences to keep them out.. :D

I have the same problem as you DAG. There are several that have their particular spots and nothing will remove them so I just clear their webs occasionally and let them do their own thing ... like hopefully catching and eating aphids and other undesirable critters attacking my plants!

I don't mind spiders - and like you don't want to touch them - but as we've always lived in old houses (in Bucks 400 then 300 year old ones, IoW a newish 172 year old and here of undeterminate age) we have learned to live with them ... and the geckos here as well!

LOL, talking of geckos, I remember seeing them on tv on the ceiling of restaurants and nobody took any notice as they were everywhere!

Was there no risk of droppings in your food? Or worse still (perhaps not) geckos in your food?

    :D :D

So getting back to spiders then, perhaps its good exercise for them to have to make a fresh web everyday, I am trying to be eco-friendly and get all of nature on my side, they are there for a purpose and perhaps deserve a little consideration, so starting to think about these things.

I blame Hornbeam for this, since taking his advice my greenhouse is now home to lots of ants and I take no notice at all, and non the worse for it!
Would only use ant killer for indoors if necessary. ;)

We have a lot of ants, DAG, but like you we only use the spray killer where necessary, not in the garden, although we had a mass of them two days ago on the Baffio (the dining patio) so I'm afraid they got sprayed.

The whitefly still annoy me and the birds don't seem interested in them. The birds come down to a burbling barrel in the pergola to have a splash around and eat a few seeds I have in a hanging thingy completely bypassing and ignoring the whitefly only inches away!

I love the way geckos cling upside down. There's been a baby one scampering around the kitchen walls, only about 4cms if that! Cute! [IMG] Never seen gecko droppings to be honest and if I have, I didn't know that's what it was! Maybe looked like ground black pepper! :D :D :D

LoL, you cannot believe how disappointed I was, not seeing one gecko on my hols :( they should have been everywhere in all the ruins and castles we visited, but not one! reptiles are the other thing thing I look for abroad as well as plants but this time just a couple of agamas. Maybe Crete will have something next month.

Not ONE gecko, Strongy?! I've never seen an agamas but recently have seen a few large lizard ... maybe they are agamas, not clever on that scene! Maybe I could package you some babies up and send them to you. Is Weymouth warm enough? There's a colony in Ventnor, IoW, near us. It's neat seeing them scampering there!

Oh, saying Weymouth, I read an article recently on a beach bar in Weymouth .... someone's shack ... not cheap but looked fab!

Another holiday, another holiday ... I ask you?! Why don't you just move to a hot climate ... it would be cheaper than all these holidays abroad! :D

I am trying to justify this one as a visit not a holiday! it has been postponed from October last year as we had to cancel the trip three days before as my hernia suddenly got worse(3rd one) and felt too bad to travel. As we had already booked the Turkey one and in-house advisor works school terms it had to be October, a bit too soon after the other one but its the only time we can go and we haven't seen my brother's place yet so feel obliged to go. (thats my excuse for two in one year) [IMG]

Okay, I accept that reasoning. Forgot your brother was in Crete ... that should be a nice visit seeing his new home! [IMG] Friends of our in America were based in Crete for three years, Heraklion? They loved it there.

We have a solution to that problem, when we go to the UK in October, my sister and brother-in-law are coming to house / catsit and then staying on to visit with us! :D
