Hello. I have this evergreen spindle. Its grown rather fat in to a big mound and is pushing against other plants.

Is there anything I can do to get it a little more narrow and tall? Should I remove some of the lower branches to open it's base up, too?

    Many thanks!

I’ve had one for a few years now and it is definitely a Billy Bunter type of plant. I think the fact that one of its common names includes the word “bush” rather than “tree” is a clue to its natural shape. But I’ve pruned bits off it from time to time and it’s never sulked. Here are some fascinating facts about the spindle bush.

Is it a evergreen Euonymus, I tend to just cut them back as and when required.

Different plant from the deciduous hedgerow plant.

That looks like Euonymus japonicus “Green Spire”, not E. europaeus. It starts off quite narrow and columnar shaped then expands outwards as it matures. It can be treated like a hedging plant and shaped with a hedge trimmer. You could topiarize it like Box. I have a low hedge of it and a taller mature plant now getting to the rounder stage.
