We've had our bed producing for oh, 15 years. Every year I have the same question, but this time I know where to go.
Many spears come up, some nice and thick but most thin and spindly. I always wonder whether the bed is getting old; whether we don't feed them enough; or whether the thin ones are just a different kind. They're no good to eat.
Should I cut them off, so they can't regenerate? Should I just leave them to grow? Should I think of renewing the bed, and how?
Mind you, I still get plenty to eat every year, hub doesn't appreciate them (but the neighbours do! I use them to rewards friends for eggs, good deeds, and the like. When you can't flog rhubarb or broccoli, noone says no to asparagus!).
By the way we do get lots of asparagus beetles ....
