Hi everyone, hope you are all enjoying the weather... and have access to a water butt.

I'm keen to find some advice regarding a spiraea argatu ( bridal wreath ) that I have. I know that pruning is best done shortly after flowering has finished, but I wonder how savagely could I prune it without causing its' demise?

The poor thing is looking very lopsided as the result of having grown in close proximity to a rowan tree ( which has been cut down ) and ideally I'd like to prune it back to about 18 inches in the hope that it will grow out evenly, but this will mean cutting right back into old wood. Would I be pushing my luck too far attempting this?

Any thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

Hi Skinner Spirea 'Arguta' (Bridal wreath) Prune in Early summer, after flowering. Young plants: cut flowered stems back to strong buds; remove weak growth.
Mature plants: cut one in four stems to ground level; remove weak growth; shorten flowered stems:)

Thank you good people. I now more confident that I can go about pruning this beautiful shrub in the way that I wanted to. :)
