Pulled a few this morning and came across this one split from top to bottom.
    Any ideas as to why?
Its the only one like is so far.

Hi capney. This is indicative of being watered after a dry spell. Quite a common fault with carrots. Cheers...freddy.

Thanks freddy for the link. Helen is actually talking tomatoes, but no doubt it is the same for carrots.

Hi Robert. This problem affects quite a few veggies. Out of all my carrots, I think I only had two that suffered from this, so there's a good chance that most of yours are ok too. Cheers...freddy.

I'm so pleased to see your carrot pic ! I grew some for the first time this year - in deep, raised containers, to try to avoid the dreaded carrot root fly. They got plenty of water and were in good compost. A few looked reasonable, but most were short and stubby like your pic (no offence!) and some had turned-up ends or were positively L-shaped! Some others had tiny 'sub-carrots' coming out from the sides and most had fine white roots growing out all over. Is this normal?? My family have been subjected to a series of tasty but deformed veg. this summer - they can't wait for the winter when we'll be back to 'bought' veg!! Next year the carrots will be in a raised bed in the ground.

Yes. your description sounds very much like my carrots. If I poke around in the soil to the top of the carrot I,m thinking, thats a great carrot, but once pulled there a nice fat dumpy carrot but short on length.
The taste is just great if a little arkwad to peel.
