    BBC news article

Whilst I understand that boxing is seen by many as a 'traditional' sport, I simply cannot get my head around how this can be classed as anything other than murder.

The chap concerned suffered a bleed on the brain, presumably as a result of one or more heavy blows to the head by his opponent, so how does this differ from two people brawling in the street where one lands a fatal blow to the others head?

And don't even get me started on the Grand National!

It is a bit strange when the CPS prosecuted 2 blokes for hurting each other in a consentual S&M game, yet you can legally punch someone to death in the ring:dunno:

I must admit that for the most part, I see no problem in combat sports, where all participants are their by choice and following rules. I used to enjoy various martial arts myself when I was a kid and teenager.

Boxing, along with this new phenomenon of 'cage fighting' are different though. I don't like them. Its one thing to have a karate match where a judge awards a half point for a skilled strike that wouldn't have immobilised the opponent but that still got through, and a full point for a strike that would have dealt a serious blow had the fight been for real (most matches when I did it were semi-contact, ie you still do the actual strike, but snatch your fist or foot back as soon as light contact is made, rather than following through and smashing your opponent), and its something else entirely to actually try to bust your opponent up for real.

Cant see a problem with boxing, both are there usually to make a bit of cash or boost their ego.
Both can walk away before and get a job scrubbing floors if they want.

Now dont get me started on the Grand National, either, that is something totally different.

What seems to make all the difference is when big money becomes involved. Boxing, bullfighting, dogfights, etc....respect for human or animal life goes right out of the window if enough cash is generated:sad:

I sort of get where you are coming from FM, but its how far it is allowed to go that I just don't get.

I understand the pride, and I even understand the difference that it can make to peoples lives by giving them a challenge to focus on - and I even understand the risk is part of the thrill; I just can't reconcile in myself the thought that we have a sport where one human being is deliberately setting out to do as much damage as possible to, or potentially kill another while others watch it for fun - particularly if the same scenario presented itself on the High Street on a Saturday night, it would end up in arrests for GBH or murder.

The situation at your work was a whole different ball game mate - and I hate to pick at your post, but you DID NOT nearly kill a bloke at work - faulty equipment and poor maintenance was the SOLE cause of that accident. You are a good man Nick, you just need to give yourself the credit for it.

I hope your nephew's fight goes well, and hope he wins - but I equally hope that someone stops it should it get to the point where someone is going to end up seriously hurt.

PS - I luvs ya too!
