Has anyone had experience of a sprained ankle? I did a stupid thing this week. Decided to prune some of the lower limbs on the oak at the top of the garden although I knew the ladder wasn't quite long enough. Needless to say, it slipped and I crashed down the lower three rungs. Ouch:OUCH:! It's very swollen, painful to walk on but has gone a good colour.

Now I'm hobbling around and can't go to work - self-employed and no work equals no pay:cry3:. If anyone has done the same, how long did it take to heal and how long before normality returned? I fear the worst:mad:.

I've sprained my ankle numerous times (I'm incredibly clumsy....) normally for me it will hurt allot for about 3-4 days and then it's much more bearable to walk on but it all depends on how bad the sprain is and yours doesn't that slight

    Hope it heals up soon:cry3:

    Thats not good news Chris.

I got signed off by the doc with broken ribs. I foolishly tried to claim incapacity benefit.

That sparked an investigation, they came round my house, went thru all my accounts, accused me of running a team of blokes while I was off sick and then refused to pay me, saying that as a self employed person I should expect times of sickness and incorporate that into my pricing structure.

Boghopper,so sorry to hear of your sprained ankle and hope you are not in too much pain and discomfort.

Does it look anything like this? in these two photos of Mr Kandy's sprained ankle he did coming down off Snowdon last September when he stumbled on rocks due to horrendous weather conditions. His ankle is now a lot better but it has taken all these months to start to feel better and even now at times it goes with a twang when he is walking on it so it slows him up until it eases off.

He went to see his Dr who told him to get rid of the support bandage that the nurse at the Minor Injuries Unit in Pothmadoc gave him as the Dr said it was causing him to now have tendonitis in the ankle. The Dr also told him to get a wobble board and to use that every day to stregthen the ankle.

We have spoken to many people who have had sprained ankles in the past and even now years later it gives them problems from time to time.

Take it easy and in time it will get better, but if it is a bad one it will be many months before it clears up...

Ouch! I can't be any help on this one, Chris, but I do hope you get better soon.

I know it's not much comfort on the work front, but at least you can keep your ankle covered up. I managed to give myself a spectacular black eye last year (no, I wasn't under the influence at the time) and, despite trowelling on more make-up than a female impersonator trying to hide a five o'clock shadow, I was still a dead spit for Swamp Thing for more weeks than I care to recall. I began to think that a burka might have certain advantages.

Hi Chris.. Poor you..!! I quite understand about no work, no money, as my S in L is SE..
Sprains are funny things & can be more painful than a break..!! You are sure it is just a sprain aren't you & not a Potts fracture or break aren't you.?????? You need to rest it.. Plenty of ice for the swelling & sit keep your foot up higher than your heart..
I have this info book marked as I had to look it up for someone else a while ago... I hope it helps you, it did me.. Just work out the severity of it.. Get it right now & you will be fine see a doc if necessary..
We followed the instructions on here & I think Jo's was healed in a couple of weeks, but twinged for a while.. That was 6 months ago & so far no problems, but you must look after it in the early stages.
The following clip is from.. Orthopaedic Conection..

Ouch, Mr K's foot looked really bad in that photo, made me wince:what::cry3:

Sorry to hear about your ankle, Chris, and I hope it's not slow to mend. I've been up and down a ladder for the last two weeks building an Arbour and once of twice I've nearly come a cropper because the ground was sloping, or I had trouble trying to get the ladder into a safe position in between Shrubs. I think only dumb luck saved me from myself after climbing up a very wobbly ladder.:D

Chris, if you are in any doubt go and get it checked at A&E. I thought I'd sprained my ankle a few years back and was struggling to drive to work. After a couple of days Mrs JWK persuaded me to go and get it checked and an X-Ray showed I'd broken my leg just above the ankle. I didn't think what I'd done was that bad and the pain would just work itself off, I never realised how fragile I'd become in my old age. I was self employed then and just sat at a desk all day so it was easy for me to continue working.

Thanks John, and all the others for your replies. It's not too painful, just a bit tender when I put weight on it. I had to go to the dentist in Rye today to have a crumbling molar prepared for a crown which meant walking a reasonable distance. Going uphill wasn't too bad but coming down again was a bit trickier. I've been resting it this evening - while watching GW - and it's not too bad. Still, it has become quite colourful:OUCH:!

Blimey Chris, I guess the crumbling molar takes your mind away from the painful ankle! :OUCH:

Marley is on the button with her advice. Ice and elevation is the best thing for it. I would suggest that if you can bear weight on it, nothing's broken. NSAIDs (ibuprofen) providing you haven't any stomach problems and/or paracetamol is a good pain killer but don't let that tempt you to get up and going too soon. Give it 2-3 days rest at least. A nice crepe bandage from toes to 4-6" above the ankle will make it more comfortable too.

Thank you Daisees, sound advice. Went to the top terrace in the garden to do my morning meditation practice and couldn't get comfortable. Plus one of the cats decided to sit on my leg, then it started chucking it down so I gave up.:help:

Came down to see what's been posted on GC and my foot's throbbing so I'm gong to see what's on tele and put my foot up.:fingerdrum:

                  Plant Potty, I hop, that's why I'm called Boghopper!:heehee:
