Is it just me, or are all hand sprayers completely useless?

I have and have bought over the years all sorts ... brand names, expensive ones, cheap ones ... but they all give up the ghost very quickly. I do not use chemicals.

I have just gone out to spray my roses which with our exceptional high temps and humidity of late have developed whitefly and was attempting to spray them with diluted Hydrogen Peroxide and could I get this thing to get more than a puff out of it? :gaah: It is a fresh mixture and I have turned the top this way and that. This happens also with my spray of vinegar and water for windows ... and just my general mister spray.

IS it just me ... ? :dunno:

I recently bought the small hozelock pump srayer from B&Q for approx £12 .... works brilliant and you can hold it upside down and it still sprays a fine mist .... you need pump approx 20 times and don't overfill

if you want something larger, like 5 litres, expect to pay nearly £40 for a hozelock .... B&Q have a 5 litre one (B&Q name) with brass fittings for under £20, but my local B&Q are out of stock (the last time I looked) ...

Argos advertise a 5 litre one for approx £16, but I have not had a look at the quality

Aldi had a very good 5 litre one for under £8 .... when I went there, they were sold out .... there are some really good ones on ebay though .... I need to get a 5 litre one as I want to fertilize a few small lawns with a seaweed/fish blend, so will be buying a larger one in a few days

My Aldi GardenLine ones 2Lt £3 work fine jet or spray, and I have put all sorts through them, Bordeaux mixture, Jeyes Fluid, Lavender emulsion etc,
I never even thought about the 20Lt Back pack, due to the size of my handkerchief garden, but it was of the same quality build

Asda is doing copies at the same price, only no pressure release valve, and plastic nozzles not Brass

Sounds like a chemical to me Victoria:biggrin:

As to sprayers, I have those small trigger spays dotted around the place and a couple of pump up hand sprayers, one for weedkiller only.

Not found any great problems, but I find the trigger sprays best for just upping the humidity around a couple of plants in the greenhouse.
The pump up ones are a bit more long winded bearing in mind if not full you need to pump them quite a lot.

Thanks guys. I have a pump spray thingy from Aldi which is okay ... I use that to eliminate ants, have soapy water in it.

Dim, I worked for Hozelock (Human Resources/Personnel/Pensions) for several years so needless to say have had lots of their products over the years and still have a small hand-held sprayer.

Maybe I should just use the pump spray thingy from Aldi for all uses as it seems to be the best out of the lot ... maybe I can get an exercise routine fitted in there, Pete ... :rolleyespink:

Nip in to Wilkos; I got mine there and the cost/quality is amazing. All brass fittings and sucks up everything in the 1ltr bottle.

I agree they are kinda annoying and they all leak at the nossle. My biggest problem with hand sprayers in the inconsistent power of the spray between squeezes, also if you are trying to water seedlings that you have just potted or are awaiting to germinate then the sprayer can sometimes blow all of the dry seedling compost away.
I much prefer the little pump action ones. I got mine from WILKIs when there was a sale on for 3 pounds best gardening bargain i have bought up to now ever. It gets used loads, does not leak and the nossle has loads of different settings...there is even a squirral setting for blasting squirrals in trees with fine jets of water you should see there faces  :blue thumb:

I get through a lot of sprayers, between Gardening & Work. I find it pays to filter the liquid going in to them, stops the nozzles getting clogged up so quick.

And put a bit of vaseline on the valve at the bottom of the pump in the pump up ones.

Hmm, think we've been here before, seem to remember some old innuendo on this subject:snork:

if I dont get a 5 litre sprayer from B&Q for £19.99, I will have a look at the ones at argos for approx £16 .... was there last week and they were still sold out

I have seen the B&Q ones, as there is one that is used by staff in the plant section .... well built with brass fittings etc and looks exactly the same as the 5l hozelock one (most prob is a hozelock one made for B&Q)
