As mentioned elsewhere, I was given some bulbs for my birthday. Tulips, narcissi and crocuses (or is it croci? I'm never quite sure!) Anyhow. My lovely little book on bulbs says some are planted one bulb depth and others up to four, and there are no instructions on the packets. Since the crocuses are beginning to shoot I think I ought to plant them quick so can someone tell me how deep? Also how damp they like to be and anything else I should know.

Crocus and narcissus should be planted quickly now. Narcissus need to planted a good 6-8" deep, about 2-3 times the bulb heigt - better too deep than too shallow. Crocus can be planted more shallowly about 2- 3 inches.

Tulips should be left til November before planting and should be ok at about 4 inches deep.

My general rule with most bulbs is to finish off with a depth of soil above the bulb corresponding to twice its depth i.e.. a bulb 6cm in depth will have 12cm (approx 5") of soil above it. The only variation being a little deeper on very light soils and reduction by up to half on very heavy ones.

Thanks for that. Any recommendations on compost type?

Multipurpose (peat or low peat for ecology) mixed with vermiculite (50/50) in my experience works fine. Don't need anything fancy.

I just looked at my prepared hyacinth bulbs which are in bowls in a dark cupboard and was pleased to see they are starting to shoot. A sure sign that Christmas is just around the corner. I must get to the shops...
