Planted bedford fillibasket this year, the tops and leaves look wonderfully healthy.
But the buttons are only the size of 5 pence pieces , will they keep getting larger or was the end of june to late to plant them out.
Ithink they have reached there maximum height of 3ft

They will get bigger, the buttons develop over the winter - your's might be a bit later but you should still get them OK.

I don't think mine (also Bedford fillibasket) are even 5p size - mine were sown 02Mar and planted out 04May. Mine were great last year, also Bedford fillibasket, so fingers crossed!

Although I think mine are a bit blown, and maybe soil was not rock-hard enough :(

But my debris netting has keep the dreaded Cabbage White off, so they don't look as moth-eaten as the previous crop.

I'm reassured to hear it's not just mine that are still small. They should start filling out soon though, shouldn't they?

Great advice as usual lad's did not want another disaster this year, noticed 2 weeks ago my leeks had started to look poorly so consulted the hessayon bible which said it could be onion fly.
Checked all 150 of them and where leaves meet the heart of the stem absolutely full of tiny greyish white maggots had to burn the lot. GUTTED OR WHAT
    Thanks lads MICKY

You're not alone with your leek problem.

I dug three of my biggest early leeks at the weekend and although they looked pretty healthy on the outside, inside was a different story. Deep inside were tiny tunneling grubs that I think were onion flie larvae. I managed to salvage two medium sized helpings only.

I've got better hopes for my later leeks.

Does this make a case of two sowings / Early and late - in future years?

From what i can gather Kristen it is all down to the dry hot and windy summer,i suppose it's my own fault for not watering enough .
Flinty seems to be haveing the same problem if he has got any later sown ones perhaps he will keep us posted.

"it is all down to the dry hot and windy summer"

Are you in the Lowestoft near me, or a Lowestoft on another planet? :D

Its been dry the last month, but it weren't before that ... not here anyways.

having said that, I water all my veg once a week through the Summer pretty much regardless of the weather. An inch of rain is good, but anything less than that is not as much as plants get ina good individual dousing from the hose (I don't use a sprinkler, other than for, say, Spuds, as I think its far too wasteful ...)
