Squash flowers and cross pollination.

    Squash flowers.

    My first butternut squash flower of the season is a female one. I dont want to lose it but there are no open flowers on any of the other squashes yet.

    If Im not actually intending to save seed, will it matter if I pollinate it with another member of the cucurbit family? Say a gourd/ squash/ courgette?

    The seed genome forming inside the growing squash wont matter, the plant just needs to be pollinated... does that make sense?! :D

    It does melinda,

    I did the same with my Nutterbutt Squashes last year, forced them to have sex with a Marrow.

    Think I put the video on You Tube but they censored it.:DOH:

    I got squashes though:dbgrtmb:

    You can try, but I'm not sure it will work.

    Never tried it myself.

    Nature tends to put certain obstacles in the way to stop cross pollination.
