My son actually asked me how they got the squash plant into the bottle to make the drink :hehe:

Do I need some straw or hay or something to lift my hunter butternut squashes from the soil? The plants are just starting to grow now, so are still quite small at the moment.

I wouldn't interfere. You could straw the fruits later on when they are forming, although they have such tough rinds it's not necessary. Small at the moment => ginormous next week with those things in this weather!

...and should I water them like crazy, or can I overdo it?

I use old tiles or pieces of timber to raise them off the ground when the fruits are forming (Saves getting straw in)

They will really appreciate being given loads of water, you can't over-water them if they are in the soil.
