    Hi all,

I got a sumac rooted cutting off whis4ey and wondered if I can just go ahead and plant it out now?

Depending on the size, will be fine. Could always pot it up and plant in the spring.

Thanks BM, I thought it would, but I didn`t want to make a blunder with this one.

They tend to have running suckers, which isn't a problem in my jungle but not one to be grown as a lawn specimen. Be careful of the sap as it will burn some people with sensitive skin.

I have found the more you disturb the roots or prune the tree, the more it suckers, so plant it wisely and leave it alone.:thumb:

    Will do.

It is for the back " wildlife" hedge.

Interesting-you just reminded of something in the Christopher Lloyd book about tropical gardening and sumacs-about cutting them flush to the ground each year and only letting one shoot grow-apparently the leaves go insane under these circumstances. As I lack knowledge about tropical plants I avoid them so do you know this to be true? I have a stepdaughter who loves tropical plants. Might be worth telling her about it if so.

I have experience of ground cutting them (to about a foot) and they do grow a nice stem but not really as described. Paulownia is the one to try this with, cut to the first or second growing point on the trunk after the frosts and watch it launch.:thumb:

Ailanthus is a similar leaf to sumach and also gets massive leaves if cut to near ground level each year.
