New wisteria - training to grow as standard (hopefully!). I have followed advice given by members and also on the RHS site and got my wisteria growing straight up a 12 ft pole! I have twined 2 strong stems and it is going well. What I would like to know is, when it gets as high as I want it to, how do I get the 'head' to form and put out multiple shoots? Should I pinch out the growing tip to encourage shoots to come off further back down the stem? It's almost at ideal height so I need to know what the next step is. Any ideas, please, anyone?

According to my bible you should have trimmed the leader when you first started this. It need done again now in the summer
    YEAR ONE SUMMER
Leaving shorter upper lateral unpruned, shortenlaterals midway up the stem by 2/3s. Remove those less than a foot from the ground completely.

    YEAR ONE WINTER
Shorten the nes leader again. Remove all secondary growth stimulated by simmer pruning and 1/3 of the previously shortened growth.
Spur prune all of the laterals to two ot three healthy buds

    YEAR TWO SUMMER

Pinch out the leaderat the desired height. The leader shoot will become indistinguishable as the head develops.
Restrict growth by shortening the laterals by 1/3 to 1/2, to encourage side shoots and the thickening of the mainstem and framework

    YEAR THREE WINTER

Shorten new laterals on the main stems back to two or three buds beginning he formation of the spur system

Shorten all shoots from existing laterals to two or three buds to encourage spur formation

Spur prune the lower shoots on the trunk rather than removing them now so so that the stem will continue to benefit from food manufactured by their leaves

    YEAR THREE SUMMER
Shorten all new shoots by 1/2 to 2/3rds for compact bushy growth
Remove low laterals to clear the trunk. Rub or cut off any new shoots that emerge
