During high winds my Standard Tree Wisteria was blown over as it's stake snapped. The top of the tree is very heavy so I'm having to stake right the way up the tree or it just flops over! Is this the best way of staking for a Standard Wisteria?

They are not normally grown at trees, Carolyn, though they are sometimes sold as standards in the nurseries, and were used in column forms in formal French gardens. The best thing I would guess is to stake it up tying the trunk in three places minimum (use rubber tree ties and not too tight) to a stout pole, and prune it rigorously and fiercely - probably monthly - in the French or Dutch manner. If you might consider this we could discuss how to so do. Otherwise plant it next to a wall and provide stout wrirng for it to climb up.

It would seem to be a question of restraining top growth whilst the stem thickens up- I suppose it's too late to get another to wind up the stem to help support it- I've seen this done beautifully with three stems making a very sturdy support.
