Yes you can blame me for the return of the freezing cold weather. On tuesday I started two different varieties of tomatoes, spinach and rocket. Got them in my heated propagater in the kitchen. Can't tell you how good it feels to get going for the spring. Living up to it's name the Rocket has already sprouted. :dbgrtmb:

    Cool.:dbgrtmb:

Its under starters orders for a few things now, starting to harden off my Kelsae & white lisbon onions, the leeks have been out in the cold frame for a few days & seem to be doing ok.

Had my first lettuce in a sandwich today, cheers Chopper :dbgrtmb: Been bringing a few of Choppers lettuce on indoors &, blimey, just checked, the chives will be ready for a first cut tommorow:thumbsup:[hr]
    Oh yeah,

Todays curry was potatoes, beetroot, parsnips & onions. All from the plot. Did add some bought lentils & soya mince though.

Yes - I also put some tomatoes in my propagator earlier and they are just coming through nicely. Does make you feel like spring is here plus it jolts me into cleaning out my greenhouse. I have chives, Flat leaf Parsley and red sorrel coming through well in the garden too - I was surprised they survived the winter! :)

This is early for me, the last couple of years it's been mid Feb to start off toms. I'm hoping I can keep these early plants in my new sunroom.

Excellent, glad they germinated, I've not tried my (yours ?) Amish Paste seed yet :dbgrtmb:

Jenny, it is early for toms My main sowing of toms is mid march.
Do you have heat in your greenhouse?

Hi John - yes I do have heat in the greenhouse so I can give them a good start & get them well grown then they are ready to go into the other greenhouse I have (which is not heated & this is usually in April). This way I can get a really early crop, then when they are almost finished my outdoor ones take over. I also sow some in late February/mid march for outdoor growing.
Mind you I do live in S.West Cornwall and it is much milder here than anywhere else in the country!
I just love home grown tomatoes and everything you can make with them - I am still enjoying using some of last years crop from my deep freeze!

"hoping"? This hasn't gone to a Committee Hearing with Mrs JWK yet then?!!

You know my view though, I think its an excellent use of your brand spanking new Sun Room and you should immediately also sow Cucumbers, Melons, Aubergines and Peppers too :heehee:

I won't start sowing my Toms until the middle of February like Kristen. I'll make a second sowing in March along with cucumbers, peppers etc. I don't grow vegs outdoor after converting my veg plot of 45' x 15' into an herbaceous border. Maybe I should start sticking some vegs in between the flowering plants as a compromise.

Ah ARMANDII, we'll soon have you digging up that herbaceous border and growing something useful (runs and hides :)) [hr]
 crickey what variety is that then? (at that price I would expect someone from the seed company to come round and sow them for you!)

Am I right in thinking that all you early starters are in the south somewhere, or is all this greenhouse stuff?

I ask because up here on the north east coast spring doesn't start until the very back end of march at least.

I'd love to get stuff off to an early start but when I've tried in the past everything just bolts, presumably because it is warm enough but not light enough inside, and light enough but not warm enough outside.

I'm in Surrey clueless, it's not much warmer down here than with you I reckon. My early toms would just die if I put them in the greenhouse now. I will have to nuture them indoors until late March/April (or until Mrs JWK realises what I'm up to and evicts them before). It's a bit of a faff getting really early veg and sometimes it works sometimes I lose some. They can get all leggy and weak (like you say because of too much heat and not enough light) and often my later sowings in mid-march catch up my early ones so I wouldn't worry that you are being left behind.

Capney is in Yorkshire, and ahead of me, so I reckon his early toms are going to be kept inside his conservatory till May at a guess.

Some T&M exceptional late blight resistant one, forget the name, will have a look when I get home. Just hope the germination rate is good.
