    Hi everyone,

I have just moved into a new house that comes with a very small garden. There is a narrow longish flowerbed in front of a high fence, in which nothing but weeds seems to have grown for quite a while.

The ground seems mostly sandy with only the odd patch of clay. There are a lot of stones in there, and it is very dry. It's south facing, but some of the sun is blocked by trees, so I would say semi-shady.

So far I have ripped out the weed and I managed to turn over the top layer of soil (maybe 15 or 20 cm). Under that the soil is very hard and stony and I broke a cultivator trying to get in there. (Chances are that I didn't really get all the roots.)

I would like to grow something colourful in the flowerbed, preferably something that reaches a certain height in order to cover some of the boring fence, but I'm worried that June is too late to start from seeds. As it is a rental, I'm not sure how long I'll live there, so I would ideally like to find something that is affordable and that I can enjoy this summer.

I'd be grateful for any ideas.

Hello Quizine and welcome to the forum.

As it's getting late for sowing how about visiting car boot sales, they usually have a selection of cheap plants and the big plus is that they will be local people selling local plants that are suitable for your soil type and location. You can sometimes pick up mature plants for pennies (that would cost you several £££s in a Garden Centre).

Great idea, thanks! I'll look into it.

Hi Quizine, welcome to the forum; I'm new too. Good advice from JWK and also if you're rural or fancy a leisure drive into the country you can find plants for sale outside people's homes.

I live rurally and bought Tomato Plants and Strawberry Plants this year after a bit of a disaster with my Seedlings getting too hot in the Greenhouse.
